DVD Review: Traffik – Remastered 20th Anniversary Edition
I know that many would argue that the definitive movie about the illegal drug trade is the 1971 blockbuster The French Connection. I however disagree. In my mind the ultimate one was the 1989 British made for TV mini series Traffik. This six one hour episode series was terrifying in its stark reality of a very dark and murky world. In celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation Acorn media has now released Traffik on DVD. The two DVD … Continue reading

DVD Review: The New World
When I saw this DVD I kind of knew a little about the subject the film was about. As a woman I know what it is like worrying about your biological clock ticking and worrying that your time might be up for bearing a child of your own. I didn’t have my first child until I was 27 years old and I lost them, I was pregnant with twins. When I got pregnant again I gave birth to a son … Continue reading

Movie Preview: Daybreakers
It is no secret in my home that I am a huge fan of horror movies. To me it is so exciting to sit in front of my TV at night with a bag of microwave popcorn and a huge glass of coca cola in the dark and watch a good horror movie. If it doesn’t make you jump a few times during the show it isn’t as much fun. With all this said it is easy to understand when … Continue reading

DVD Review: Smiley’s People – John Le Carre
John Le Carre followed up his hit novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with another equally enigmatic one Smiley’s People. Set several years later it once again has George Smiley as the main character. Following Smiley’s unmasking of the Mole, Gerald, George found himself once more on the outside. His call to action comes after an old and trusted ex spy turns up very dead on Hampstead Heath. The Circus has changed following the Bill Haydon fiasco, and all contact with … Continue reading
DVD Review: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy – John Le Carre
As a book reviewer I can honestly admit that I read very few top ten authors. Generally when someone makes it to the lofty NYT list they have lost their edge. Oh, the books are fine, they are quite readable, but lack the needy urgency of a hungry author. In 1974 the relatively unknown John Le Carre unleashed his full length novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on the unsuspecting world. His hero George Smiley had been well established, the 1961 … Continue reading

DVD Review: The Christians – Bamber Gascoigne
It is estimated that approximately 33% of the worlds population is Christian, of course that term includes some quite diverse groups, Roman Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, and Anglicans, to name but a few. One thing is clear though, Christianity is by far the largest world wide belief system. This latest release on the Athena label is a 5 DVD box set containing 13 episodes that explore the roots, the history, and in someways the future of Christianity. I have to admit … Continue reading

DVD Review: The Shape Of The World – Patrick Stewart
This is yet another winning DVD set from the Athena folks, I do not know how they find the material, but when it comes to documentaries they can not be beat. We think little about mapping the world today, from the comfort of my PC I can go anywhere in the world I wish using services like Google Earth. I can live my past vicariously through Google Street Maps, I can cruise down the streets that I used to frequent, … Continue reading

DVD Review: Brian Sewell’s Grand Tour
Brian Sewell may not be a name immediately recognizable in the US but he is well known in Europe, he is a world class art historian and also art critic for the Evening Standard, a large English newspaper. Well heeled young English gentlemen of the 18th century would often finish their education by spending a year or so exploring parts of Europe, the major country of interest being Italy. The ‘finishing’ of a young gentleman’s education was not just about … Continue reading

DVD Review: Edge Of Existance – Donald MacIntyre
I have to admit that I have been mightily impressed with this new DVD company Athena. Everything that I have watched has been of the very highest caliber. There is a saying about only doing one thing, and doing it well. Athena does documentaries, and does them superbly. Edge Of Existence stars athlete and investigative journalist Donald MacIntyre, a seasoned veteran with more than two decades of reporting. His mission is find some of the remotest places on earth and … Continue reading
